WordPress FireFox extension
I often want to know how many hits my wordpress blog has had without loading the stats page, mainly so I can compete with a fellow blogger who sits opposite me in the office 😛
So I made the MMD WordPress FireFox extension, install it and you get a tiny status bar panel that shows your current daily hits (for multiple blogs). You can right click the panel and hit “View Stats Details” and FireFox will happily take you to your normal stats page on WordPress.com

The MMD WordPress FireFox has been reviewed by Mozilla and approved for general public consumption so you can download and install it directly from the main FireFox addons website and get automatic updates.

The Future: I would like to see stats for the other blogs in the same wordpress.com account, and maybe yesterdays…

That’s right, only works for one blog at the moment (the first). If there’s an interest in it working for multiple then I can work on that.
It gets the stats from m.wordpress.com so adding in yesterdays is nice and easy. Multiple blogs is possible, although m.wordpress.com has a bug in terms of displaying the names of multiple blogs for me :S I’ll work on multiple blogs for the next version… where would you want to see yesterday’s stats? I had thought about an up or down marker (today vs. yesterday) which could have yesterdays count on a tooltip….

I’m having trouble downloading your WordPress Firefox extension. I keep getting the following message:

Hi yarodin, if you set your account details in the options it will automatically look up the blog hit count when the browser starts 🙂

At smog, I assure you there’s no spyware involved in my code, the only reason admob shows up in the status bar is because wordpress.com use it for mobile ad stuff or you have some other infection – there’s no spyware in this extension

A little further investigation shows that the admob reference is indeed caused by wordpress.com
This extension works by reading the mobile wordpress web page at http://m.wordpress.com/ which (if you look at the source) includes a reference to admob at the bottom which is a mobile web ad platform of some kind but isn’t spyware as far as I can see. Either way, this is a wordpress.com issue and nothing to do with the MMD WordPress FireFox extension 🙂

Its a cool add-on, I am searching something like this for ages. The only problem is that, i have my own wordpress domain. Can you update the plugin with the possibility to track my visitor activity from wp.mydomain? Then I can guess hundred thousands people will use it in their firefox.. 🙂

I’ve tested it with FF 3.6 and upgraded the listing at addons.mozilla.org so all should be good for you to keep on using it!

Seems as if the extension is not compatible with Firefox 4.0, which is bad, since life used to be great with the extension working in previous versions. Now, it’s misery 😉
Is an update possible?

Hi Zoltan, glad you like it. I uploaded a FireFox 4.0 compatible version to mozilla yesterday, so it’s not been through the review process yet, but you can still install it from https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/mmd-wordpresscom-extension/
Also, it now supports multiple blogs 😀

Seems fine on my 6.0.1 I’ll check the mozilla listing…
It goes into your status bar (or addon bar these days) so if you have that hidden you might not see the extension. In the next version I’m planning on making it more customizable.

Hi Horia, not directly in the current version but I’ll do that for the next version (next week). For now, set the lookup interval in the Options screen to 30mins. You can lookup manually from the menu.

In developing this I’ve introduced a bug in the development version and intend to make it a bit more apple mac friendly so it’ll pass approval. So I won’t be able to release it this week, but please bear with me, it’ll be in the next update!

Hi Mike and thanks a lot for this plugin! seems very useful.
However, under firefox 9.01 in ubuntu 10.04 gnome environment I’m not able to make it work. When I click the button “account setup” in preferences nothing happens.
Is it a known bug or just incompatible with my current mozilla/linux versions?

Glad you found a fix. That’s the same version of FF I use on Ubuntu and I’ve managed to recreate the bug when trying to set account details from the addons tab in FireFox. Thanks for letting me know, I’ll get it fixed for the next version 🙂 In the meantime as you said, you can access it from the menu down the bottom.

Just pushed version 2.5 through the main firefox addon site – this verison fixes a couple of layout bugs in the password dialog and works with the new wordpress stats pages

WordPress.com just changed the structure of the stats information breaking the current live version (2.5). I’ve developed a fix and put v2.6 into the FireFox review process but it’ll be a few days until it goes live through the firefox update site. Sorry for the inconvenience.

I can’t see a support button so…
In the last two days the button does not respond, but does still indicate how many comments have been made. I am running a Mac OS10.7.5 with a 2.5 GHZ Intel Core i5.
Any ideas for fixing?

Odd, works fine at any number for me. Sometimes it goes a little confused at midnight. Could you try right-clicking and updating the stats?

Sorry for the delay… I haven’t got a mac handy but at a guess make sure the “addon bar” or “status bar” are visible in the FF options.
